Turning Mallets
Mallets are an everyday tool in the shop, whether for assembling workpieces, chiseling joinery, or carving. In this workshop students will learn to use the lathe while making two different mallets – same style we’ve used in our shop and workshops for years. First will be an assembly mallet and looks like an oversized hammer, great for helping to seat joinery or assembling snug pieces. The head of this mallet is attached to the handle via a sturdy wedged through tenon. The second will be made from a single piece of wood and is used to help chop with a chisel or aid when carving with gouges.
Safe use of the lathe will be emphasized as students learn about the lathe, tools, and basic spindle turning techniques. Students will turn - rough out, shape, sand, and finish – their mallets. Students are provided with personal safety equipment, a dedicated lathe and use of tools during the workshop.
This weekend primer will cover the basics of spindle turning on a wood lathe. Students will learn the essential skills required to turn spindles - allowing students to continue with the craft and learn more advanced techniques down the line. Students will learn about the lathe, turning tools, sharpening, chucking methods and basic techniques to manipulate a workpiece.
Materials will be provided. No experience necessary. Workshop is limited to four students.
