Bowl Turning II - Natural Edge Bowls
Bowl Turning II - Natural Edge Bowls
Learn to turn a beautiful natural edge bowl in this weekend workshop.
A natural edge bowl is a direct expression of the log it came from. A hallmark of this style of bowl is the undulating rim shape - often showcasing the bark. The final shape of the bowl itself is a unique reflection of the contours of the log as well - often looking slightly elongated with two high and two low points along the rim.
This type of bowl is turned from a fresh piece of timber – so this workshop will also serve as a nice primer for green bowl turning. Green wood is freshly felled lumber that still has a high moisture content. In our case we will turn the bowl from start to finish in one sitting, letting the bowl dry after turning is complete.
Students will learn to navigate the challenges involved with a more complex bowl shape, improving on their tool control and being introduced to turning and drying green bowls. This workshop builds on the student’s previous experience in Bowl Turning I and explores more advanced turning techniques.
Prerequisite: “Bowl Turning I”
Students must have completed a previous bowl turning workshop with Hew before joining this workshop. This helps ensure students enter this workshop with a similar level of fundamental skills.
Bowl blanks will be provided. Students will complete the bowl turning during the workshop but will need to let their bowl dry before finishing them at home.
Workshop is limited to four students.
